Gotham City Impostors Review
Gotham City Impostors Background
Brought to us by the good people responsible for the F.E.A.R. franchise, Monolith Productions, creators of some of funnest first person shooter games for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Gotham City Imposters is an online first person shooter set in the DC Universe but you will not be playing as Batman, Joker, Robin, Killer Croc or any other famous members of Gotham City. It is a very interesting idea that somehow actually works. It not only works but it can easily be placed as a member of the best Xbox 360 shooters games.
Gotham City Impostors Presentation
While this is a download-only game it, looks very good. Like many other online first person shooters, you will need to create your character. You have two sides to fight for, one inspired by Batman, called “The Bats”, and the other inspired by The Joker, called “The Jokerz”. You can customize your character pretty much any way you want and, despite this being a downloadable game, the level of customization is incredibly deep.
Each of the arenas has a great look to it and you can clearly tell that you are in Gotham. There are little nods here and there to the DC Universe that fans will love. For me, the amusement park level is the best of the bunch. The overall frame rate of the game keeps up with the action very well even when there are 12 players on the go. In all, as far as the overall presentation goes, you really cannot fault this game.
Gotham City Impostors Game Play
Gotham City Imposters is a six versus six game with four different modes of play. Team Deathmatch is what you would expect: take out the other team as fast as you can. Psych Warfare is a cool idea where you need to find a battery and bring it back to your base and make sure you keep it safe. If you do this, you will brainwash the other team. Bounty Hunter will see you trying to kill the opposing team but you will also need to pick up coins they drop when they die. Fumigation sees you trying to find and keep three gas canisters. If you manage this, you will swarm the Jokerz with bats or you will swarm The Bats with poisoned gas.
There is a great range of weapons some of which are crazy but really fit the tone of the game very well. Also, there are cool gadgets that let you do things like skate and glide trough the various levels. There are five arenas, which may not sound like much, but their large size keeps them from getting boring.
The game is generally fun but can be a frustrating experience at times. This has nothing to do with the core gameplay. Sometimes, in between battles, you can wait up to five minutes before you are in a battle again. This really can kill your motivation to play. The servers are also not to shy in disconnecting people as well.
Final Thoughts On Gotham City Impostors
In all, while this is not the best shooter for Xbox 360 or any console, this is easily one of the funnest shooter games for Xbox 360; and while it may not rewrite the FPS book, it can still offer great entertainment. Sadly, the servers kind of spoil the game and for that we have to knock it down a few points. It may not sound like a big deal but trust me when you have spent at least 20 minutes of a one hour gaming session waiting for the game to start you will know what I mean.
