The Top 5 Historical Figures In Gaming

As the saying goes, truth can be stranger than fiction. It’s no wonder that history has endlessly fascinated us as a species; there are some incredible stories that have unfolded over the years!  We shouldn’t be surprised then, to encounter some of these giants of the past striding through that most modern of genres: video games.

Let’s take a look at the top historical figures that continue to have an impact on the world of gaming today:

#5 John Morgan

Better known as Captain Morgan, this man is not only known for his delicious spiced rum; he has also had a profound impact on gaming.  From Sid Meier’s Pirates! back in the 1980s, which was responsible for bringing many a young lad into the world of PC gaming, to the infamous Pirates versus Ninjas debate which rages to this day, this Welsh privateer pillaged his way up to the fifth spot on our list.

#4 King Arthur

#3 Julius Caesar

Julius caesar gameCaesar has proven a multi-faceted character in the world of gaming as much as he was in ancient Rome.  He is known not only for influencing the tactical war game genre, with infamous titles such as Rome: Total War, but also has had a weighty impact on the city building category in his Caesar I-IV.  As you can see, the Roman Empire manages to retain its grip on our imaginations to this day.

#2 Hitler

#1 Oda Nobunaga

oda nobunaga's ambition koeiThis name may confuse some of you at first, until you realize the implications.  Nobunaga himself was a warlord in the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States) period of Japan.  Nothing too big yet, right?  That all changed in 1978, when a company named Koei released a game called Nobunaga’s AmbitionYou may recognize Koei as the company behind nearly ALL the historical simulation games on the console market.  The titular Ambition series continues to this day, as does Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Uncharted Waters, and more.  Koei is literally emblematic of historical gaming, and they built it all on the back of Nobunaga over dozens of titles throughout the years, capturing him the #1 spot on our list.
